We went to Sri Lanka mostly because we couldn’t stop thinking about the idea of roadtripping by tuk-tuk. Two weeks later, we’d bumped down coastal roads, weaved through busy streets full of buses and people, and pulled over more times to than we could count. Sometimes for fruit stands or coffee, sometimes just to take it all in. It was hot, beautiful, a little chaotic, and ended with some of the most chill beach days we’ve had in a while.
Colombo
We landed in Colombo with a plan: pick up the tuk tuk, hit the road, and see where the next two weeks would take us. The city was hot and hectic, full of honking traffic and busy streets. It was a quick stop, but our first taste of Sri Lanka.
After a brief driving lesson, we set off. Driving a tuk tuk through Sri Lanka was as wild and wonderful as it sounds. Chaotic roads, roadside coconuts, swerving buses, and more honking than we thought possible. We had no idea what we were doing at first, but that was half the fun.
Weligama
Eventually we found ourselves in the little surf town of Weligama. It was an easy place to settle into. Quiet mornings, salty air, surfboards lining each street. We quickly found our routine of slow mornings at a coffee shop, exploring a new beach each day, and ending the evening with a delicious meal of curry and sambal.
Our time in Weligama flew by, with each day blending into the next since it was all filled with slow beach days. Eventually we started making our way back toward Colombo, stopping in Unawatuna. We spent our time wandering around, trying hoppers for the first time, and drinking way, way too much coconut coffee.
