We ended up in Armenia just by chance.
To be completely honest, it wasn’t a country that we knew much about or was on our list of “must visit” places. Like many travelers, our sights were set on visiting Georgia. We couldn’t find any low-cost flights directly into Georgia, but we did find a flight into Yerevan, Armenia.
For us, all it takes is finding a cheap flight and then our travel plans are made. As soon as we arrived in Yerevan, we knew we had overlooked this amazing country.
The city of Yerevan is incredibly modern and pleasantly surprised us. The architecture is stunning. There is a bustling cafe culture with locals sitting outdoors socializing with a coffee at all hours of the day and night. The food is delicious and fresh with restaurants ranging from local Armenian food to international cuisines.
The rest of the country is quite a contrast to the modern capital of Yerevan. It feels a bit like traveling back in time in the best way – ancient monasteries, sleepy towns, locals selling freshly-picked produce on the side of the roads. Within just an hour or two outside of the city, there are UNESCO World Heritage sites, the icy blue Lake Sevan, monasteries over 1,000 years old, and beautiful natural landscapes.
We decided to extend our stay in Armenia (twice actually!) because we just didn’t want to leave.
Although Armenia doesn’t have the tourism infrastructure like other more frequently visited countries in the region, this makes it the perfect place for adventure travelers like us or someone looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination.
We hope these photographs will inspire you to learn more about Armenia and possibly even plan your own trip there someday. It was difficult to choose only 25 photos because we could not stop clicking our cameras the entire time we were there.
Thank you Wizz Air for the cheap flight. We are forever grateful that it led us to Armenia.
