Visiting Georgia has been on our travel bucket list for years.
And we’re not talking about the state in the USA.
Tbilisi, Georgia is a quirky, cool city that is often underrated in the travel world. It’s the capital of Georgia, but it’s not your typical European capital city. In fact, since Georgia is located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Tbilisi has a unique mix of history, food, and culture.
First off, the city is old – ancient old. Walking through the Old Town is like stepping in a time machine with the architecture, cobblestone streets, and wooden balconies. There is no shortage of streets to aimlessly wander through while simply enjoying the sights.
And the food! Georgian cuisine is such a hidden treasure. Despite getting food poisoning in Georgia, we still enjoyed (most of) the cuisine.
We had never had Georgian food before visiting and we quickly fell in love. Imagine the type of food you crave on a day when you want to be comforted while laying under a blanket while watching your favorite movie. That’s Georgian food. One of our favorites was this cheesy, buttery bread called khachapuri that is like pure comfort food. Khinkali is another favorite, which is like meat-stuffed soup dumplings. Delicious.
Speaking of food, you’ll find cool little cafes all around Tbilisi. The locals love their coffee, and the café culture is strong. It’s the perfect spot to chill and people-watch.
Tbilisi is artsy too. There are theaters, galleries, and live music venues popping up all over the city. You can catch a traditional Georgian performance or check out some modern art – whatever floats your boat. In addition, there’s also tons of beautiful street art and murals around the city.
Lastly, the people here are some of the friendliest you’ll meet. They’ll welcome you with open arms and make you feel like you’re part of their family.
So, if you’re looking for a unique, budget-friendly, Tbilisi should be on your travel radar. It’s got that perfect mix of old-world charm, while also having a modern, hip vibe.
We hope these Tbilisi, Georgia photos will inspire you to learn more about the city and possibly even plan your own trip there someday.
